Cowan was born in 1931 during the Great Depression, going to the movie house was a huge treat. And then, television became available to the public in the late 1930s. Broadcasting created stars, and Ralph was enamored by them. Being a child prodigy, Ralph always felt like he was born in the wrong family and felt like his mother should have been Rita Hayworth or Betty Grable. He was fascinated by movies and television broadcasting his whole life. In the 1970s, he painted some of his favorites actors in their famous roles.
